 Chiusi della Verna
Its territory lies between the valleys of the Arno and the Tiber, strategically between the Casentino and the Valtiberina. On a stunning outcrop of rock, amid silver beech trees rises the Santuario of San Francesco alla Verna, one of the most famous Franciscan places of worship.The little church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, the first building on the sacred mount, contains Della Robbia terracotta. In the Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta are the masterpieces by Andrea della Robbia, “l’Annunciazione” and “l’Incarnazione”. The Franciscan route follows other fundamental steps: the Sasso Spicco (the rock) where the Saint used to pray; the Corridoio and the Cappella delle Stimmate built where San Francesco was given the stigmata, “the last seal” by Christ, in 1224. The International Organ Music Festival, with its evocative sound, is hosted in the Basilica of the Sanctuary.

How to get there: Autostrada A1 exit Arezzo and SS 71 as far as Rassina , then junction towards Chitignano-Chiusi della Verna; from Florence SS 70 Passo della Consuma and SS 71 as far as Bibbiena, then SS 208 to Chiusi della Verna; from Forlì SS 310 Passo della Calla, from Cesena E 45 exit Pieve Santo Stefano, then SS 208 Passo dello Spino. From north Autostrada A1 exit Firenze Sud, then SS 70 as far as Bibbiena.
